One system for defining cortex brain areas came from Korbinian Brodmann, and in my diagrams I will reference the Brodmann Areas which will help in mapping the diagrams to the physical brain areas to ensure that nothing gets missed.
Brodmann dissected the brain and labelled areas based on their physical structure. We now know from MRI mappings that actual brain operation doesn’t always neatly fit into the physical structures that he identified.
Recent work with MRI is now listing about 97 brain areas, and these may become the focus in future research.
