Respiratory system – air is drawn in through the mouth and trachea to the lungs on inhalation, and expelled on exhalation. The average adult respiration rate is reported to be 12 – 18 per minute, but many meditation and yoga practitioners will breath at a slower rate, typically around 4 – 6 breaths per minute. There is good evidence that slower, deeper breathing leads to better overall health.
Asthma is a common complaint, caused by inflammation of the air passageways and lungs. The cause is not fully understood, but environmental chemicals and air pollution are likely to be triggers for many people.
